MIXED MEDIA BOOK MAKING

This workshop combines various mixed media and surface design techniques with bookarts to create an amazingly varied collection of book structures that will make ideal visual journals, field sketchbooks, memory books, or simple photo-albums. Expect to try everything from making a book from a single page and ripping a text block by hand to the secrets of the long-stitch and Coptic link-stitch bindings. We will tea-stain and fold text pages in “non-traditional” ways, we will layer and collage and make a big ole’ mess. Students are encouraged to bring their own collection of buttons, bits of fabric, rusted metal, memorable photographs, quotes and anything that might be used to embellish a book.

Materials for you to bring…

*One, large brown paper grocery bag

*Pencil, eraser, and scissors

*Pencil sized or small exacto knife and extra blades.

*A medium sized, metal (not plastic) ruler and/or square.

This is a tool commonly used by architects and construction

workers. It is basically two heavy duty metal rulers that are fused at

a corner to make a 90 degree angle. Can be found at your local hardware store.

*A large, inexpensive paint brush or foam brush.

*One piece of medium grade sandpaper.

*Paper scraps and/or magazines for collage.

*Miscellaneous art supplies that you don’t mind sharing with everyone: watercolor paints, oil pastels, colored pencils, inks etc.

*A personal collection of mixed media memorabilia: pressed leaves and flowers, twigs, colorful buttons and beads, fabric scraps, stamps, bottle caps, old photographs anything that is inspiring to you.
