BOOK ARTS SAMPLER: BEYOND THE BASICS: INTERACTIVE BOOKS

This jam packed workshop intends to move beyond the basics learned in the Bookarts Sampler: Primer to further develop exciting possibilities within the classic accordion, pamphlet, long-stitch and Coptic book structures. For example, the pamphlet and accordion structures can be combined and there are various entertaining ways to join two books into one using the Coptic binding; the Dos-a-do (back-to-back) or Gatefold (two books facing each other, the front covers opening like doors). Students will also learn a few simple closures, techniques for appealing wrap-around covers, and surface design tricks for making your own decorative papers.

Materials List:

• Four 1.5 – 2 inch, curved binding needles
• Awl
• Bonefolder
• Pencil, eraser, and scissors
• Exacto knife w/ extra blades
• A medium sized, metal (not plastic) “L” square
• Sturdy, medium sized glue brush
• Small self healing cutting mat
• A journal for note taking
